Impact Moling
Impact moling is a trenchless technique for the installation of straightforward pipe, cable and ducting, it is a low cost reliable method for relatively short trajectories beneath roads and other areas where surface disruption is to be avoided.
A 'mole' is a torpedo-shaped pneumatic device which drives through soil using a percussive or hammer effect. The mole is lined up in a launch pit with a catch pit and then set off in motion - the pipe or duct is drawn in behind the mole.
Moling utilises the impact force generated by an impact hammer unit to push the mole unit into compactable soils, displacing the soil around the shell and compacting it to create a void of the required size. The forward progress of the unit allows any pipe or cable attached to its rear end to be pulled into this void as it advances.
Cost Effective Trenchless Installations
Installations of water mains, ducts, cables and underground services
- Low-dig technique
- Minimal excavation beyond necessary launch & reception pits
- Low operational and reinstatement cost
- Minimal or no environmental disruption
- More cost effective than traditional trenching methods
- Minimal / no excavation beyond necessary launch pits or termination points for the installed service
- Minimal disruption to the customer’s property
- Environmentally and socially beneficial
- Typical bore sizes are in the range of 25mm to 150mm diameter.
